The reason is very simple: the visual element is easy to understand and generally does not require particular interpretative skills from the audience. In addition, thanks to drawing and other graphic techniques, it is particularly flexible, as it can be personalized or modified to better adapt to various contexts of use and to very specific communicative purposes.
It is not surprising that, even in the twenty-first century, marketing cannot ignore elements of a graphic nature; in fact, they are indispensable for creating and consolidating the identity of a brand, characterizing a product, or making a message more effective and penetrating. For this reason, the development and implementation of everything related to the “graphic” part of marketing are entrusted to professionals possessing very specific skills and competencies: the advertising graphic designer, also known as a visual designer.
The main duties of such a figure include:
• design, development, and creation of logotypes ;
• graphics for newsletters, advertising posters, and business cards;
• layout for publishing editorial products such as newspapers and magazines;
• advertising banners for apps and websites.
Each of these elements represents, with all its particularities, a visual communication tool, one of the preferred ways of marketing to convey and disseminate information (for the reasons explained above) to a wide audience, reachable through various channels.
The figure of the graphic designer
As already mentioned, the creation of the graphic elements of any marketing campaign is the prerogative of the advertising graphic designer. It is a professional figure, classified as an employee or external freelancer, defined by highly sectoral but at the same time quite diversified theoretical and practical skills.
In addition to knowing how to use the main graphic processing software, in fact, a visual designer must also possess basic skills in video editing and photography. Knowledge of typography and lettering, fundamentals of programming language, communication, and marketing complete the main requirements of the professional profile.
Such a wide range of skills can only be acquired through an adequate training course, starting with higher education (artistic high school or art school). At the academic level, however, the main options are represented by degree courses focused on graphics or design or by the Academy of Fine Arts. Subsequently, it is possible to acquire notions of marketing and communication through a master’s or a specialization course. Alternatively, it is possible to undertake a targeted path by choosing to purchase an advertising graphics course.
Regardless of choice made, however, it should be emphasized that adequate training is essential for entering the marketing sector as a graphic or visual designer. In fact, it is essential to be able to prove the skills acquired and, therefore, it is not advisable to rely on do-it-yourself or self-taught learning techniques, not only due to the obvious limitations of an approach of this type but also due to the impossibility of demonstrating the level reached. In a varied but competitive sector such as marketing, the “weight” of acquired skills and knowledge is increasingly important.
